1. Parkrun at Markeaton Park

Parkrun is a 5km event that takes place every Saturday at Markeaton park in Derby. Starting at 9:00am, this free weekly run is perfect for amateurs and professionals alike. All you need to do is register online, pop along with your printed bar-code and you’ll be issued a tracker to measure your time. There are plenty of other runs to try in Derby too such as the Ramathon Half Marathon, Derby 10K, Derby 10 Mile, Derby Half Marathon and more!

2. A Board Game Cafe

Jacobean House on the Wardwick has been empty for many years, so it’s welcome news that it will be back in use as Derby’s newest board game cafe, Alchemy (now closed). There are around 400 different games to choose from, and a selection of craft ales, tea and coffee and gourmet sandwiches to keep you fed and watered water whilst destroying your playing partners. It could be a chance to have your annual Monopoly argument; playing on Derby’s very own version of course (providing it’s in stock!)

3. A Trampoline Park

A first for the city were two Derby city centre trampoline parks that opened in 2016. Bounce Revolution on Siddals road and Oxygen Freejumping (reopening December 17th) at the Soccerdome on Pride Park. If you haven’t visited one yet 2017 might be a good time to give it a go, it’s great for kids, and can provide some fun exercise – the best kind!

4. A New Pub or Bar

As you may have heard, Derby is going through a bit of renaissance when it comes to its night-time establishments. Suds and Soda, the Lord Nelson and the Orange Tree all opened their door in 2016 and, in our humble opinion, are well worth a trip. Located around the Great British High Street of the Year, the award winning Cathedral Quarter, each has there own particular charm and have already made an impact on Derby’s ever growing bar scene.

5. An Escape Room

Another first for the city. Derby was lucky enough to get its very own escape room experience in Make Your Escape in 2016. Set in an unassuming building on The Spot, Make Your Escape will be one of the most immersive and fun hours you are likely to have this year. A second venue, Unescapable, is set to open on The Wardwick in January, giving customers an even greater choice of themes and story lines!

6. Crazy Golf & Bowling

If you ever wondered if Derby needed a Crazy Golf and Bowling alley then you will find out this year when a new course called Paradise Island Adventure Golf and bowling alley Hollywood Bowl open. Situated in the Intu in the city centre, on the Nandos level of the mall, they will be perfect for when you’ve finished your shopping, need something to do on a Saturday night or want a birthday party with a difference!

7. A Kitty Cafe

If you’re a cat lover but might not have one at home, then there is a place you can go to get your kitty fix. Lady T’s, on the Wardwick, has a number of cute felines for you to stroke whilst sipping a coffee.  Entry is free but they advise booking your table to avoid disappointment.

8. A Festival for Real Ale

As the capital for real Ale it wouldn’t be right if Derby not to host some events dedicated to it. There are currently two held in the City. The Winter Beer Festival in February and the Summer Beer Festival in July.

9. More Derby Festivals

Format, the UK’s leading international contemporary festivals of photography, will be returning, Derby’s exciting yearly Feste will be dazzling us with its magical performances and Derby Film Festival will be wowing us with some spectacular film. These are just a handful but there will be many more, it’s no wonder Derby has the title of “The City of Festivals”. Please keep checking back for more announcements.

10. Visit Quad

With a cosy cinema, a wonderful cafe, a neat little gift shop and plenty of exhibitions held throughout the year. Derby’s Quad is a great place to head if you want to go to the cinema, fancy a bite to eat or want to give your cultural side some attention.

Did we miss something out? Will you be trying any of these? What would you like to see in the city this year?
