Midlands leading retail and leisure destination, Derbion, has announced the launch of a brand-new Cycle Hub which will provide a secure, indoor cycle storage facility for Derby’s cyclists.

Midlands leading retail and leisure destination, Derbion, has announced the launch of a brand-new Cycle Hub which will provide a secure, indoor cycle storage facility for Derby’s cyclists.

The Cycle Hub, which is now open at the centre, will offer more than 34 secure spaces for bikes, a bike repair and pump stations, as well as convenient lockers to store helmets and other personal belongings.

The hub, located in an external unit on London Road, is delivered in partnership with Spokesafe, Spoke Out and Derby City Council. The Cycle Hub aims to encourage more people to travel into the city by bike than ever before, by offering those looking to commute greener through Derby a safe location to store their bike, which is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

To use the service, customers will simply need to visit the Spokesafe web app at www.spokesafe.app and pay a minimum fee of just £1 to receive a unique secure access code which will give entry to the Derbion Cycle Hub.

The launch of Derbion’s Cycle Hub follows Spokesafe’s success with innovative cycle storage facilities across London. The business has now chosen to launch in Derby as it looks to provide people across Derby with a secure facility to store their bike while visiting Derbion or the city centre itself. Together with ActiveScore, Spokesafe have supported the design of the space at Derbion and will manage the facility through its specifically designed app system.

The Cycle Hub announcement follows significant recent growth at Derbion with retailers including NEXT, River Island, The Body Shop and Toy Planet, investing in their current store formats. New retailers to the centre including FLANNELS and Mango have enjoyed success since opening their doors. Additionally, Jack Wills will open at the centre in July, with Frasers set to arrive at the centre later this year.

Adam Tamsett, general manager at Derbion, said: “Cycling is a cheaper, greener and healthier alternative to travelling by car or public transport into the city centre. We’re thrilled to offer secure storage facilities to give visitors to Derby and people commuting into the city centre the confidence that their cycle will remain safe throughout the day.

“We’re confident that the arrival of the Cycle Hub will be popular with visitors once it opens in-centre this spring. We have lots of exciting plans for the centre this year and we look forward to announcing more news soon.”

Lucy Gilliano, founder of Spoke Out, said: “We support, encourage and empower more girls, women and non-binary people to cycle in Derby but one of the main barriers to cycling here is cycle theft.

“We were therefore really excited that Derbion were so open to the idea of creating secure and accessible cycle storage. It’s been a pleasure to support with the development of the project and work collaboratively to bring an innovative and much needed facility to Derby. I can’t wait to park my cycle there and pop to the shops!”

Max Wilson, founder of Spokesafe, said: “Spokesafe has been helping landlords in London provide secure cycle storage to their communities for over two years and we are delighted to be extending this service to Derby.

“We have worked in partnership with the teams at Derbion, ActiveScore and Spoke Out to design and deliver a really great facility which should cater to all types of riders and bikes, which we hope will become a cornerstone for active travel in the town centre. We are looking forward to opening day and of course serving as many cyclists in the town as possible going forwards!”
