Lewis, 19, suffered serious injuries following a BMX crash in September 2024, which left him in a coma and needing intensive care. He has since faced a long recovery, including serious brain injuries, cognitive fatigue and difficulties with speech.
Now, after showing extraordinary determination, Lewis has returned to the sport he loves — this time on the velodrome track at Derby Arena.
The University of Derby student has swapped BMX racing for track cycling and is now training regularly at the Arena as he aims to progress through the British Cycling pathway and, ultimately, reach Team GB level.
His return has already seen impressive results. Lewis recently won a silver medal in the team sprint at the BUCS Championships and has also competed at the Track National Championships.
Councillor Ndukwe Onuoha, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for Streetpride, Public Safety and Leisure, said Lewis’s journey showed the power of sport in recovery.
He said: “Lewis’s journey is truly inspiring and demonstrates the incredible power of determination, resilience and the role that sport can play in recovery.
“We are proud that Derby Arena has been able to support Lewis as he returns to cycling and pursues his ambitions.
“Our facilities are here for everyone in the community, from those taking their first steps into cycling to athletes striving for elite performance, and we look forward to seeing Lewis continue to progress.”
Derby Arena, operated by Derby City Council, is one of the region’s leading indoor cycling venues, with its velodrome supporting both grassroots riders and high-performance athletes.
Lewis said Derby Arena had played an important part in both his training and his decision to study in the city.
He said: “Derby Arena is the perfect facility to train and was part of the reason why I chose Derby University.
“The race events at the Arena have been great to be a part of and I look forward to many more hours of training and racing at Derby.”
Lewis’s story has been praised as an inspiration to the wider community, showing how access to high-quality sporting facilities can help people at every stage of their journey — from beginners to elite athletes.
Anyone inspired by Lewis’s return to cycling can try track cycling at Derby Arena, with introductory sessions and expert support available for riders of all abilities.
