Derby is set to celebrate the Great Big Green Week with a vibrant, free event organised by the St Peter's Quarter Business Improvement District (BID).
Activities are scheduled throughout the week, culminating in a lively community day on Saturday, June 14.
Families are invited to St Peter’s Church from 11 am to 4 pm, where local creative artist Scraggy Moo will lead inspiring art and craft workshops. Participants will craft unique eco-friendly items, including insect houses made from recycled cans donated by businesses within the St Peter's Quarter. This event highlights the importance of sustainability and encourages conversations about positive environmental impacts.
Adding to the festivities, colourful stilt walkers adorned with vibrant flowers and butterfly characters will parade through the St Peter's Quarter, offering excellent photo opportunities for families and passers-by.
Great Big Green Week, held from June 8 to 16, is the UK's largest initiative celebrating community action against climate change and promoting nature protection. First launched in 2021, the event has rapidly grown, attracting over a quarter of a million participants nationwide last year.
Gemma Pindard, Deputy BID Manager, warmly invites everyone to join: "No booking is needed—just turn up for a day filled with eco-friendly fun. Fantastic activities are lined up, and children will have an amazing time with Scraggy Moo’s creative projects."
This year’s theme, ‘swaps,’ encourages simple changes people can make to achieve a greener future. Brad Worley, BID Manager, adds: “We’re excited to launch our green initiatives during this special week. Following the event, we’ll host tidy-up and planting sessions in collaboration with local businesses and celebrate 'Meat Free Mondays' to spotlight vegan and vegetarian dining options throughout the area."
Local businesses like coffee shops will also participate by offering discounts for reusable cups, while banks will advocate for paperless transactions, demonstrating how small actions can significantly impact sustainability.
