Derby’s Cathedral Quarter Hotel Opens Its Doors This Christmas to Help Tackle Loneliness

The Cathedral Quarter Hotel in Derby is taking a heartwarming approach to Christmas this year — by staying open throughout the festive season to welcome anyone who might otherwise be spending the holidays alone.

Derby’s Cathedral Quarter Hotel Opens Its Doors This Christmas to Help Tackle Loneliness

Located on St Mary’s Gate, the hotel is offering half-price stays complete with breakfast, lunch, and a traditional Christmas dinner throughout December and January. The initiative aims to help those without family plans enjoy a warm, sociable and welcoming break.

Operations Manager, Isuru Akalanka, said he hopes the offer will bring people together at what can be a difficult time of year:

“I really don’t want people feeling lonely this Christmas. We’ll be offering half-price room deals and affordable food packages for anyone facing the prospect of spending Christmas on their own. Guests are welcome to join us and enjoy the season in good company.”

The hotel’s new Food and Beverage Manager, Iresh Samaradiwakara, is currently creating a special festive food and drinks package for guests.

“It’s important for people to know there are places to go this Christmas,” he said. “We’ll have festive menus, Christmas activities and plenty of opportunities to make new friends. We want guests to feel at home — somewhere warm, welcoming, and full of festive cheer.”

Gift vouchers are also available for anyone wanting to treat a friend or loved one to a stay at the hotel.

This initiative follows the major refurbishment completed last year at the Grade II-listed Cathedral Quarter Hotel, which saw all 38 en-suite bedrooms refurbished with new beds and 43-inch TVs. A new Starbucks coffee lounge has also opened, welcoming both hotel guests and the public.

Key areas, including the lobby, restaurant, and meeting rooms, have been redecorated to highlight the building’s historic charm.

Isuru added:

“We want the Cathedral Quarter Hotel to be part of Derby’s community — a place where people meet for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Hopefully, our Christmas offer will bring new faces through the door. I’d love for guests to arrive as strangers and leave as friends.”
