The Purple Flag, awarded by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM), acknowledges cities that provide a safe, vibrant, and welcoming night-time experience. In Derby, this award reflects the collaborative work of the Cathedral Quarter and St Peters Quarter Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), alongside Derby City Council.
The accreditation underscores the city's commitment to offering diverse dining and cultural venues while prioritising visitor safety and wellbeing. Local businesses, law enforcement, community organisations like Derby Street Pastors and Taxi Marshalls, and various city agencies all contribute to the success of Derby’s after-dark scene.
Brad Worley, BID Manager for both Cathedral Quarter and St Peters Quarter, expressed pride in the achievement:
“The Purple Flag award celebrates the vibrancy, safety, and diversity of our evening economy. It’s a testament to the dedication and teamwork of countless groups working together to make Derby’s night-time economy flourish. The opening of Vaillant Live and Derby Market Hall this year has been a fantastic boost to our offer.”
Councillor Sarah Chambers, Cabinet Member for Cost of Living, Equalities and Communities, added:
“This award is wonderful recognition of the hard work to create a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere in our city centre. It strengthens Derby’s reputation as a place where people feel excited and safe to spend their evenings.”
Martin Langsdale, Chair of the Cathedral Quarter BID, concluded:
“This 13th consecutive Purple Flag award is a testament to the effective collaboration that underpins our night-time economy. It’s fantastic to see the Cathedral Quarter’s continued success in supporting the city’s vibrant after-dark experience.”
