The service will take place on Thursday, December 11, from 6:30pm to 7:15pm.
Helen Wathall MBE, managing director at Wathalls, says the event is the highlight of her year and a special way to give back to the community.
“It means the world to me when I see Derby Cathedral fill up for our Christmas Memorial Service,”
said Helen. “Christmas is a time of joy, but it can also be a time of deep reflection.
Our Memorial Service brings people together to remember, to celebrate and to find comfort in community.
It’s a beautiful way to keep the spirit of Christmas alive while honouring those we miss.”
Helen first organised the Christmas Memorial Service at Derby Cathedral in 2008, unsure of how many people would attend. Since then, it has grown into a much-loved tradition, with families returning year after year to remember loved ones, alongside those who have been more recently bereaved.
“We invite people who have come to Wathalls for support at some of the most difficult times in their lives,”
Helen added. “It’s a very cherished event and offers a moment of togetherness before the festive season really gets underway.
For me and my family, it’s also a precious opportunity to remember those we love who are no longer here – especially my wonderful dad.”
The annual service is a key part of Wathalls’ commitment to supporting people through every stage of grief. It acknowledges that Christmas can be particularly poignant for those who have lost someone close, while still offering hope and warmth.
Far from being a sad or sombre occasion, the evening is designed to be uplifting and heartwarming, celebrating the spirit of Christmas while honouring those who are no longer with us.
The service will include:
-
Carols sung by the Derby Cathedral Choir
-
Readings and poems
-
Moments for quiet, personal reflection
Guests will be invited to write a message in memory of someone special. These messages will be placed on the Wathalls Christmas tree inside the Cathedral during the service. Afterwards, they will be displayed on Christmas trees across Wathalls’ branches, including Alvaston and Allestree, so the messages can be shared with the wider community.
Following the service, Helen and her team will serve sherry and mince pies to guests.
This year, Wathalls will also be collecting donations for Marie Curie, its chosen charity for 2025, helping to fund vital care and support for people living with terminal illnesses.
