Maria Fowler, Derby-born former star of The Only Way Is Essex, has launched a brand-new Reformer Pilates studio in Mickleover, offering an inclusive and empowering approach to fitness.
Now a well-known body confidence and wellness influencer, Maria has teamed up with her husband, former world champion BMX racer and coach Kelvin Batey, to open Bloom Reformer Studio on Warner Street. The studio aims to break down the barriers often associated with traditional fitness spaces by offering a warm, community-driven environment focused on movement, strength, and self-confidence.
The couple, who live in South Derbyshire, say Bloom was created to make Reformer Pilates more accessible to people of all ages, abilities, and body types.
“There’s a certain aesthetic around Reformer Pilates that can be daunting,” Maria said. “We’ve kept the calming, beautiful space people expect, but infused it with an energy that’s inclusive and welcoming. I want everyone who walks through the door to feel like they belong here.”
The studio currently offers 27 classes per week, including options for complete beginners, those returning to exercise after having children, and tailored sessions for athletes. It also features men-only classes and specialised sessions for older women and post-menopausal clients.
Maria added:
“This is a full-circle moment for me. I grew up in Mickleover and worked in local shops as a teenager, so opening a business here feels incredibly meaningful. This community is home.”
Kelvin brings his elite sports background and coaching expertise to the studio, ensuring Bloom can support clients at every stage of their fitness journey — from gentle movement to high-performance training.
Bloom Reformer Studio is one of Derby’s first dedicated Reformer Pilates spaces and is part of a larger redevelopment of the old Finewood Studio building on Station Road. The site is being transformed into a vibrant community hub by Derby’s MHL Commercial, and will also include a new deli, wine bar, and serviced office space.
The letting was completed by commercial property specialists OMEETO, with director Chris Wright commenting:
“Maria and Kelvin are well known locally, and the response to Bloom has already been fantastic. The interior is stunning, and the space has a real sense of purpose. We’re excited to see how it grows.”
Reformer Pilates uses a specialised machine that provides resistance through springs and a moving carriage, enhancing traditional Pilates exercises. It's known for improving strength, flexibility, alignment, and posture — and it’s suitable for all fitness levels.
Maria summed up Bloom’s mission simply:
“Fitness should feel good — not punishing. Bloom is here to help people move with confidence and feel great in their own bodies.”
