There is a small area near Derby Railway Station that has a variety of pubs, bars and restaurants. Among the restaurant options is Mount Everest, a Gurkha restaurant specialising in Nepalese and Indian cuisine.
Upon entering the restaurant you are greeted with bright and airy surroundings, with paintings hanging on the walls all in keeping with the ‘Everest’ theme.
After consuming our poppadom starters it was time to choose our main dishes, and as with all good Indian restaurants there is certainly plenty of choice available to suit all tastes.
Normally I would go for a standard tandoori chicken dish but on this occasion I decided to be a bit more adventurous and went for the Mount Everest Mixed Grill – one of the restaurants House Specials consisting of tandoori chicken, chicken tikka, lamb tikka and sheek kebab, served with naan bread. This was one of the best tandoori/tikka dishes that I’ve ever had – all the meats were exceptionally tasty and spicy where needed, and the naan was a perfect compliment to the dish. Needless to say I’ll definitely be having this dish again on a future visit.
For vegetarians there are a few dishes available including a couple of vegan options, one of which is the Aloo Simi – potatoes and green beans cooked in a medium spicy-Nepalese style. Our vegan dinner opted for the Aloo Simi and really enjoyed this particular dish, and will no doubt have this again should we visit again.
The staff at Mount Everest were fantastic throughout our visit – very welcoming and incredibly helpful, especially when advising on vegan dishes.
If you are looking for a Nepalese/Indian restaurant to visit just outside of Derby city centre, or simply after some post-match drinks, then I would recommend you pay a visit to Mount Everest on London Road.
