Nico’s Italian Restaurant on Brick Street, Derby was the choice for this years Valentines Day meal.

Upon arrival we were greeted by a friendly waitress who made us feel very welcome.

After sitting down, I noticed the tables were rather neat; with glass tops surrounded by wooden borders, and underneath are 4 separate quarter segments each with different Italian food ingredients –very eye-catching and a nice touch.

We decided to skip starters and go straight to mains!

For mine I opted for a ‘make-your-own’ pizza with chicken and sweet chilli beef. The beef isn’t normally offered as a topping here (it’s part of the speciality pizzas) but the chef was more than happy of make this for me. Needless to say it was delightful, and the chilli beef did add a spicy kick to it! The base was slightly crispier than usual but this would only be a very slight complaint.

My dining partner opted for the Vegetable Supreme pizza but with the cheese and onion swapped for spinach and pineapple.

We both shared a side of garlic bread, again specially adapted for vegan tastes by using olive oil instead of garlic butter (I’d happily have this side again).

I had informed the restaurant of my dining partners’ vegan requirements upon booking, and for the dessert they had prepared a vegan brownie. It went down a treat, and using banana instead of egg certainly made for a different taste.

My dessert choice was vanilla ice cream which rounded off the meal nicely.

Dining at Nico’s was extremely worthwhile with superb food, excellent service, fantastic staff, and a pleasant venue.

Extra marks are awarded for accommodating our various requirements.
