Of all the new eateries to open in Derby over recent months this is the one I have been most excited about.
The Post House, in Victoria Street, can be described as a mini-food court but with an emphasis on independent traders.
Here you have an interesting choice of eight bars and restaurants to choose from:
- Sorting Office Bar - premium soft drinks, hand selected wines, sprits, larger and cider
- Chocolate Alchemy – handmade chocolates, cakes and roasted coffees
- Fresh Rootz – veggie/vegan world street food
- Lorentes – tapas, Spanish cuisine
- Tollgate Tap – fine real ales
- Bohn’s – handmade gourmet burgers
- Sapori - Pizza Italiana – Italian pizzas made here in Derby
- Post House Cocktail Bar – artisan cocktails, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic
With so much choice on offer you can be forgiven for spending a minute or two deciding what tickles your taste buds. I eventually settled upon a Sapori pizza.
There were several intriguing pizzas to choose from but I decided to have the Chicken Tikka which consisted of chicken tikka, onion, sun-dried tomatoes, tomato and mozzarella.
The pizza was very well made and had plenty of chicken. It was really tasty! I’ll definitely be having another one in the future.
My vegan dining partner naturally opted for Fresh Rootz with her choice of dish being the Mexican Nachos with spicy bean, tomato, vegan cheese and guacamole. She was very impressed with the dish, which was spicy enough for her requirements – indeed you can specify how spicy you would like your dishes to be.
All of the dishes at Fresh Rootz are vegetarian but they can also be adapted for vegan and gluten-intolerant diners, so there is plenty of choice available for meat-free dining here.
As well as Fresh Rootz vegetarian/vegan dishes are also available at Sapori and Lorentes.
Drinks-wise we both opted for ales from the Tollgate Tap. I’m no stranger to Tollgate’s ales having sampled a few at various pubs including the superb Town Street Tap in Duffield, and suffice to say the ales we had here at The Post House were excellent quality.
After our main meals we found room for sweet treats. My dining partner decided to stick with Fresh Rootz by sampling one of their vegan cakes whilst I opted for a chocolaty slice from Chocolate Alchemy.
The only snag from the evening was that one of us had our food served well before the other did, but this is not the fault of the chefs at all. If you are going to order from several different units then be aware that some dishes will take longer to prepare than others, and that it may be difficult for the various units to time things so that they come out at the same times. For reference my pizza came out several minutes after the vegan dish, so in cases like this it may be worth asking how long your choices may take so that you can time your orders accordingly.
Timing issues aside we really enjoyed our visit to The Post House and we were particularly impressed with the amount of choice available including the vast array of vegetarian/vegan options.
We will certainly be making another visit to The Post House soon.
