Phew we made it!
Make Your Escape is an immersive escape room experience where players have to pit their wits against the clock and solve the puzzle before the time runs out.
The entrance to Make Your Escape is an unassuming door just across from the Spot area of Derby, and it is through here and up the stairs that you are transported from the centre of the city to an abandoned military bunker where you need to keep calm, solve the clues and escape!
We were slightly earlier than our team mates which gave us the perfect opportunity to talk to the friendly and welcoming owner, Shelly. Inspired by a trip to a similar game in Budapest back in 2014, made redundant in 2015 and with little help from the Prince’s Trust enabled her to set up Derby’s first escape room.
I’d seen my friends on social media talk about escape room experiences and it was something I had always wanted to try; so it was great to hear that one was opening in Derby and that we were invited to give it a go.
After our mission briefing it was time to enter ‘the bunker’. Due to very strict confidentiality we cannot divulge details about our mission, but all you need to know is that it was extremely good fun!
Five minutes in we were overwhelmed by clues and trying to make sense of it all, but slowly we started to piece everything together and the narrative began to form. Shelly is on hand should you need some help (which we did) if you do start to struggle and there is an impressive amount of props and puzzles to have you searching for a clue in anything and anywhere.
We managed to do the whole game in 51 minutes and 6 seconds, obviously if you are cleverer than we are you might do it faster.
There are toilet facilities and the room is well air conditioned with water being provided for players before the game is started. There is no lift access and the game is not suitable for players under 12 years of age.
Please visit Make Your Escape if you love puzzles and want something exciting and brain-teasing to do for an hour with friends and family, either for a mid-week night out or a weekend thing to do.
Another room, ‘Spellbound’, is coming soon and we look forward to returning to play again when it opens!
