A 200-acre historic park three miles north of Derby city centre, with play areas, lakeside paths, paddling pools, boating, a craft village and landscaped heritage features.
Markeaton Park is a 200-acre green space north of Derby, welcoming more than one million visitors each year. It combines family-friendly recreation with lakeside walks, historic parkland and remnants of the site’s past. Children can use the modern play areas, run around the open grassland and enjoy the paddling pools. Paddleboats are available for hire on the lake, while the Orangery Café serves barista-style coffee, homemade cakes and light meals with views of the gardens.
The Markeaton Craft Village provides workshops run by local artisans, with opportunities to browse and buy distinctive handmade items.
The park also has Georgian garden structures and ornamental features, heritage trails following former farming patterns, and remnants of the Second World War military camp. Interpretation boards explain the site’s changing history. Markeaton Park is open daily from 7am to 10pm. There is free on-site parking near the Craft Village and main entrance, and the paved routes are suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. It can suit a family outing, picnic, jog or self-guided heritage walk.
