A scenic countryside stroll through woods, fields, and quiet lanes.

Starting and ending at the welcoming Hackwood Café, this gentle 3-mile circular walk takes you along an old railway line, through peaceful farmland, and past historic Radbourne Church and Hall. Expect wide open views, charming woodland paths, and plenty of fresh air – the perfect way to stretch your legs and soak up the Derbyshire countryside.

  • Start at Hackwood Café car park. Walk out through the entrance and turn left.
  • Follow the road ahead towards the footpath between the houses.
  • Turn left onto Radbourne Lane.
Walk a short distance until you see a stile on your left.
  • Climb over the stile and follow the footpath.
  • Continue to the steps leading down to the abandoned railway line.
You'll see remains of the old railway bridge.
  • Turn right at the bottom of the steps. Walk along the old railway line.
  • At the crossroads, turn right (left goes to Mickleover) towards Radbourne.
  • Cross the footbridge over the stream, then continue to a stile.
  • Climb over the stile – Black Wood (Scots Pine trees) is on your left.
  • At the top of the slope, enjoy the views of the countryside and Mickleover on your right.
  • Pass through three fields and a gate until you reach a minor road.
  • Carefully cross the road and go through the gate opposite.
  • Follow the footpath through trees, climb another stile, then cross a footbridge.
  • Turn right, then go through a gate and turn left up the hill (woodland on your left).
  • At the top, you'll see a triangular beech enclosure on your right and Radbourne Hall ahead.
  • Walk down the hill towards Radbourne Church.
  • At the bottom, go through the field gate and head straight to the metal kissing gate.
  • Go under the Yew tree, follow the path left past the church.
  • Continue through the metal gate and along the track to the road.
  • Turn right, keeping to the right-hand verge.
You'll pass Cunnery Wood and go over a brick bridge.
  • Just beyond the bridge on the left, take the signposted footpath.
  • Go through the gate and walk up the field towards the oak trees near Silverhill Farm.
  • Continue towards the solitary oak tree, then into the next field.
  • At the field boundary, follow the line of telegraph poles.
  • Pass the white Mackworth Water Tower on your left. Continue until you reach a hedgerow.
  • Keep the hedgerow on your right until you reach a stile.
  • Climb the stile, cross the field towards the Mackworth Water Tower.
  • Turn right and walk towards the road.
  • Climb the stile onto the road – take care!
  • Turn left and walk along the road, then turn right onto the footpath back to Hackwood Café.
